NY Couple Develops App To Help You Find & Support Black-Owned Restaurants

EatOkra makes it easy to find and support black-owned restaurants in 35 cities across the U.S., including New York City.

The free app, which is available to download on iPhone and Android, pinpoints your location and offers selections based on categories. In NYC, restaurants are divided into six main categories: Breakfast and brunch, African cuisine, vegan, Caribbean cuisine, soul food, and a catch-all category "local eats."

New York couple Anthony and Janique Edwards are the creators of the app. In a company press release, the duo stated that “gathering and food define our sense of community, and EatOkra permits users to locate and support those communities."

Anthony says the long-term goal is to use the platform to pair restaurant owners and chefs with community organizations, especially ones that help families put food on the table. To learn more, visit eatokra.com.
